Life, in all its forms, is guided by a master plan stored inside every cell. This master plan is called DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid). DNA acts like a blueprint that contains instructions for the growth, development, and functioning of living organisms. Understanding DNA, genes, and heredity not only helps us score well in exams but also gives us insight into how life is passed on from one generation to the next.

DNA – The Instruction Manual

DNA is a long molecule present in the nucleus of a cell. It is shaped like a double helix, discovered by Watson and Crick. The “ladder” of DNA is made of four bases – Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C), and Guanine (G).

Heredity is the process by which genes are transferred from one generation to another. This happens during reproduction. Gregor Mendel, known as the Father of Genetics, explained heredity through his pea plant experiments, giving us the laws of dominance and segregation.
  • Dominant genes express themselves strongly (e.g., tallness in peas).
  • Recessive genes stay hidden unless both copies are recessive.

  • Forms the basis of DNA fingerprinting in crime detection.
